It is very important that dogs tolerate all type of handling. Think how many times a dog is touched and not just for petting. At the vet, getting a dog in and out of cars, checking ears, hooking on a collar and leash, wiping a dog off. It is important that you associate touching with a pleasant experience for the dog. Start slow and just touch the area. praise the dog and give a tasty treat. Gradually increase the time you touch the area working up to holding your hand still. With patience and pleasant association your dog may even come to love the same type of touch that sent him running and squealing before.
