It is getting to that time of year when puppies will invading homes in full force. Make your selection carefully, whether from a breeder or a rescue. Please stay away from Pet Stores that sell animals. Most likely they are from a puppy mill with horrible conditions and it is all about the mighty $$$$$$. A reputable breeder will have parents on premises and more than willing to let you tour their kennel. A rescue will let you spend time with the potential adoptee and have as many questions for you as you do for them. Both are most concerned about their puppy/dog and want to make sure it will be well cared for.
Socializing your puppy is of the utmost importance. A good breeder will have started this process for you. By handling the puppy and getting the puppy used to human touch. You want to continue this by spending special time with your puppy developing that special bond and trust. Never force a puppy to approach anything. Let them approach at their own speed. Some may want to look at things from a distance before going over to check it out. Your goal should be 100 new things in 100 days. These are everyday items that are very new to a puppy. Examples are: hats, umbrellas, hula hoops, balls, brooms, childrens toys, wheel chairs, canes, men with facial hair, grass, the items are endless. I like to place the item on the floor and let the puppy approach at its own pace. Once the puppy has sniffed it and possiblly nudged it, move it just a bit. Let them see the item move and shake. It is a wonderful adventure and you will be gaining trust at the same time. It is a good idea to enroll in a puppy class as well. This will teach your puppy how to interact with other dogs. How to play appropriately and body signals other dogs use.
Puppies are wonderful things! Please remember they are a 10-15 year committment. But also 10 -15 years of wonderful companionship.
