Recently there has been a lot of talk and debate about development in and around our neighborhoods. I must admit I am not a native of the eastern shore but I have known this area all my life and traveled through it as our family vacationed in Ocean City when I was a child. Looking back on those days I do admit that the area has seen significant growth in the last 25 years.
A few years ago, my sister and I bought a property in Grasonville so that our families could enjoy the water and all the benefits it brings. I fell in love with the area and now call it my permanent home.
I moved to the Eastern Shore because of its beautiful surroundings, the promise of a water privileged lifestyle and to escape the trappings of living in and around the DC Metro area.
Having said that, I do have to admit I am not in opposition of growing the area thoughtfully. I personally feel that with strong planning and community involvement an area can grow positively and I personally would love to see our area grow that way.
When I look at our area as a homeowner, consumer and community member I am concerned. I’m concerned about how our community is growing. The fact that when Royal Farms completes its build where Holly’s sits today, we will have no less than 12 gas stations/convenience stores (when you consider East and West) between Chester River Beach Road and the Bay Bridge. I don’t think it goes unnoticed to anyone, that we have drug stores on every corner, with the Rite-Aid and Walgreens directly across from one another. “Dollar”-like stores are also prevalent with Big Lots, Dollar Generals, Dollar Trees popping up from Kent Island to Chestertown. And although I understand that these business are important, I also feel that growth in the areas that build community are even more important.
However, unpopular this point of view may be, I’d like to see growth in QAC that fosters community and family. Whether that is bowling alleys, pools, shopping, theatres and/or restaurants - I agree it needs appropriate planning to ensure a positive impact for the community, but I think we have the talent in our community leaders to make that happen.
I'm curious to get your opinion...
How do you feel about development in QAC? What type of development is the right development for us?
