Safety Tips at Home for Someone With Alzheimer's * Remove all scatter rugs and electrical cords. One symptom of Alzheimer's is decreased awareness, so removing these items, as well as any other, will decrease the risk of trips and falls. * Add grab bars to toilets, bathtubs and showers. Also add bath mats or stick-on bath stickers and even a bath chair if needed. * Check lighting in the house and add additional lamps and night lights if necessary. * Double check chairs in the house, especially kitchen chairs, to make sure they are heavy enough so as to not tip over or slide backwards. * Add safety gates for the stairs, open walkways, patio doors and of course, pools. * Raise the lock on doors leading outside. * Here is a suggestion we have never tried: Cover the inside doorknob with Velcro in the same color cloth as the wall to camouflage the door and prevent the opening of a door and wandering away. Never, ever lock a person with Alzheimer's in a house unattended or without the ability to evacuate in an emergency. * Place all medications out of reach or in a locked cabinet. * Store cleaning supplies, insect sprays and other poisonous items out of reach or locked away. * Secure scissors, knives, guns and tools out of reach in locked drawer or cabinet.
