How to Get My Dad to Brush His Teeth Last year, we had a client who absolutely refused to brush his teeth. His daughter was extremely worried that he'd end up with dental problems on top of the Alzheimer's and other ailments. Here are some ideas for others who are experiencing the same situation: 1. Buy an electric toothbrush. Some afflicted with Alzheimer's forget how to brush their teeth. An electric toothbrush can help with that. Add the toothpaste on it and have them put it in their mouth and then turn it on. They can just gently move the toothbrush around in their mouth and when it beeps, they will learn that they are finished. 2. Purchase a brand of toothpaste that tastes good, such as a child's brand. Yes, believe it or not, it can be something as simple as, they no longer the taste of the toothpaste. 3. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste at your parent's house, nursing home, in your purse etc. Brush your teeth while you're with them. Have them join you in the brushing experience. If they see you brushing your teeth, they may find it easier to brush themselves. 4. The last suggestion I have is to brush their teeth for them. I'm sure most of us would rather our parents brushed their teeth on their own, but tooth brushing is not an option of "to do" or "not to do." Our mouths carry a lot of germs that can lead to tooth decay and other illnesses.
