Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatments
Although there isn’t a cure for osteoporosis there are several ways to prevent more bone loss.
Preventions and treatments for osteoporosis include:
1. Eating healthy. Include a diet with plenty of calcium. Calcium can be found in milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy greens, sardines (yum) and fortified juices and cereals.
2. Including Vitamin D in your diet. Vitamin D can be found in orange juice and milk, as well as, cod liver oil, salmon, canned tuna and egg with the yolk. You can also get vitamin D by spending 10 – 15 minutes a day outside in the sunshine. I wouldn’t recommend anything longer than that, because I would then have to recommend sunscreen and sunscreen blocks vitamin D absorption.
3. Engaging in weight bearing exercise. Weight bearing exercise can include walking, running, soccer and basketball, although most of us won’t be participating in any soccer and basketball in this stage of our lives.
4. Do not smoke. Smoking increases bone loss.
5. Limit alcohol to no more than 2 drinks a day.
6. Limit falls by removing rugs, etc. (See our other posts on Safety at Home and Safety at Home for the Alzheimer’s person forums.shoreupdate.com/thread/1526/safety-tips-home-alzheimers)
7. Avoid certain medications. Ask your doctor about bones reducing medications and replacement medications.
8. Reducing caffeine intake.
9. Taking up yoga can help with balance (that is associated with falls).
10.Medications prescribed by your doctor.
I am not a doctor and the suggestions I may give are from clients who have tried them or from my reading on the subject manner. Before making any drastic decisions in your life, I would first speak with your doctor. Please stop by and visit our website: yourhomecompanion.com/
