12 Reasons Older Adults Should Be Active
As a person ages, physical activity and exercise is very important. Ten minutes a day can make a big difference for someone who is sedentary.
Physical activity may:
1. Slow down the aging process.
2. Extend your life and the ability to live longer independently.
3. Strengthen your muscles and bones, as well as balance and posture, thus reducing the possibility of a fall.
4. Lower your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
5. Reduce stress, depression and anxiety.
6. Help you sleep better.
7. Improve your energy levels.
8. Combat memory loss and lower the risk of some types of dementia.
9. Relieve aches and pains.
10. Reduce stiffness.
11. Help arthritis pain.
12. Help to keep weight off.
Gardening, dancing, swimming and walking are great options. Even chair exercises for someone with limited mobility can make a difference in someone's life. Try adding in strength building exercises as well.
Please always consult with your doctor if you have not exercised in a long time, have osteoporosis, or have a history of heart disease.
