The ABC's of Antibiotics Two weeks ago, YHC had a exhibitor table at the Senior Symposium in Chestertown. While there, we were able to take advantage of handouts, pamphlets and discussions that led to a wealth of information. We thought we would share some of it with you.
Here is some information on antibiotics that we were able to garner:
The ABC’s of Antibiotics:
Ask: “Are these antibiotics necessary?” “What can I do to feel better?”
Bacteria: Antibiotics do not kill viruses. They only kill bacteria.
Complete the Course: Take all of your antibiotics exactly as prescribed (even if you are feeling better).
Antibiotics are not necessary for:
*Colds or flu *Runny noses *Most coughs and bronchitis *Most ear aches *Sore throats not caused by strep
Using antibiotics the wrong way can cause bacteria to grow into a superbug. This could make your next infection much harder to treat.
Please remember, just because you are feeling better, does not mean you can or should discontinue taking your antibiotic. You should always continue to take the antibiotic, until it is gone. If not, the bacteria grows stronger and more resistant, meaning that the antibiotic will no longer work in the future.
