Lowering Your Sodium Intake The powers that be state that the average person should consume less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. However, the average American takes in more than that, approximately 20x more than the body needs or about five or more teaspoons a day. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure and lead to fluid retention, which can result in swelling of your hands, legs or feet. It can also lead to other health issues. Some of the best ways to eliminate or reduce the amount of sodium you consume are: 1. Eliminate salty foods from your diet by using less salt when cooking. It's a myth that sea salt is better for you than regular table salt. 2. Choose low sodium foods. Read all food labels. Many companies offer salt-free or reduced salt items. Low sodium is considered to be 140mg per serving. 3. Throw away your salt shaker. Season your foods with other spices such as lemon, garlic, vinegar, pepper, ginger, cumin etc. 4. When reading food labels, items that have more than 400 mg of sodium are considered high in sodium and should be avoided. High sodium food additives include salt, monosodium glutamate and sodium. 5. Home cooked meals are the way to go. Eating out and prepackaged meals contain more sodium than your home cooked meal. www.YourHomeCompanion.com
