What is an ALF and how is it different from a nursing home? They sound the same to me.

Hi Lois – You’re not the first person to confuse these institutions. Here’s what I can tell you about the two types of facilities. Assisted Living Facilities starting popping up in the early 90’s. ALFs consist of private apartments. The apartment is usually furnished with the resident’s belongings. The facility usually offers three meals, social activities, 24 hour care, and scheduled transportation. This type of facility is for residents who don’t want to or can’t manage at home alone, but do not need a high level of care. They may need help with custodial services only, such as light housekeeping, meals, assistance with medication, and laundry. Some of the apartments do have small kitchens for those who like to cook for themselves. Also, residents are allowed to have cars as some can still drive. These type of facilities take primarily private pay and some take Medicaid. Nursing Homes, also referred to as skilled nursing facilities or SNF, have been around for a very long time. Nursing homes are for those who need around the clock care. SNF patients are not able to live on their own and need 24-hour medical supervision. There are several levels of care in a nursing home, but almost all of them are under the care of a licensed registered nurse or physician, who may or may not be on staff. Both Medicaid and Medicare pays for these types of facilities. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, just ask. www.YourHomeCompanion.com
