Tips for Living with Macular Degeneration
We’ve written several blogs on Macular Degeneration, but this is our first blog on suggestions on how to make life with Macular Degeneration a little easier to deal with. The most important tip I can give anyone caring for or living with Macular Degeneration is to organize and stay organized. Put all items back in their proper place.
Here are some other tips that may help:
• Label medications with large print stickers or use special magnifiers for bottles. Keep medications organized.
• Purchase large text playing cards, puzzles and books. Or, you can listen to audio tapes and books on CD.
• Use a large type keyboard, larger monitors, and screen magnifiers. Many websites have adjustable print size and contrast options. If these don’t help, audio aids such as screen-reading software are available.
• Arrange furniture closer to the TV. Ensure that lighting is optimal and glare is controlled.
• Purchase optical devices such as magnifiers, telescopes, and closed-circuit TVs.
• Wear sunglasses with amber or yellow lenses to help control glare, even inside the home.
• Organize items in the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Always put items back in the same place. Have a special place for coats, shoes, keys etc. Even go so far as organizing your clothes closets and items in your refrigerator and cabinets.
• Place large stickers on the stove, thermostat, and other appliances. Here is one suggestion that I had never heard of, but read online, mark key positions with raised labels (nail polish or spots of glue work).
• There are many items now available for those with low vision such as telephones with large buttons, clocks, watches, special safety cutting devices, talking scales, and talking tape measures just to name a few.
