Improving Balance – Senior Care
It’s a Catch-22. Many times when an older person falls, whether or not they are injured, they become afraid of future falls. This fear can then inhibit them from everyday activities, which leads to inactivity. When a person is less active, they become weaker, which then in turn, can lead to falling. See what I mean?
One of the services our senior care providers administer is supervision of doctor prescribed activities (we try to avoid the word exercise). Below are two common activities we supervise in the senior care environment.
Posture Perfect – Senior Care Activity #1
First, with a counter top or sturdy table in front of you, rest your arms comfortably on top. (We’ve also used aone-leg-stand sturdy chair, such as a lazy boy – in the photo, the man is using a wall, which should be a last choice.)
Your legs should be comfortably apart and knees slightly bent.
Look straight ahead and keep your back straight.
Slowly rise up on your toes.
Slowly lower yourself down.
Repeat this 5 times.
Secondly, keep your posture the same, but raise your toes and front part of your foot.
Lower your foot slowly. Repeat 5 times.
Lastly, continue standing in the same position. Lift one leg several inches off the floor and hold for 5 seconds, slowly lower it. Next, lift the opposite leg.
The Eyes Have It – Senior Care Activity #2
Sit in a stable, straight back chair, with or without arm rests.
Focus your eyes on a target or spot at least 10 feet away. Slowly stand and slowly lower yourself back into the chair, keeping your eyes on the target.
Repeat this same activity, but with your eyes closed.
Repeat 5 times.
